You can't 100% blame audiences for this as most of Hollywood's original, Oscar-bait content doesn't get a wide release until just before the film premieres on DVD and VOD. For instance, Jojo Rabbit (one of the more entertaining films of 2019) opened in five theaters. Compare that to a film like Aquaman that opened in over 4,100 theaters.
