I have a couple sites that we are members of for my company as time fillers. We cherry pick what we do though.
It seems to me that these companies have tapped into the laziness of Americans and don't pay anymore than a typical salary would pay, for the most part, but the companies aren't on the hook for any benefits. The only thing that will cause this to come crashing down is for people to get off their asses and work, which doesn't look like its going to happen any time soon. You can't give stupid people free reign of their work schedules and assignments, nothing will ever get done.
