I don't think it's quite that simple any more. Your strategy has been mine all my life. Unfortunately, not discussing some of these things with family can come to a head, because ignoring the discussion can sometimes have real life consequences that impact the ones you love.
But to my point, it's just never going to be a discussion I'd participate in. If I were around family and this happened(especially if it always resulted in heated debates) I'd either just leave or if I want to be nice, I'd get up from teh table or wherever everyone is talking, and go to the couch and play on my phone, the back porch, anywhere away from that discussion.
And I get what you're saying about real life consequences, but I'd 100% be ok accepting whatever consequences someone wanted to send my way for not discussing politics. I can live with that...unless it was Mom and Dad leaving me out of a multi million dollar inheritance, then maybe I'd change my tune
