Is there a difference between energy independence and oil production -v- oil consumption?
Yes, the way they define it involves total energy production. If you take all the energy we produce such as hydro + wind + coal + natty gas + oil you reach the strained definition of energy independence. But if for example you only need 1bcf gas/day and produce 2, and you need 10 bopd but only produce 6, are you really energy independent?

I understand what you're saying. My question was simple curiosity about where "energy independence" came from.
