I’d figure it’d be the opposite for power conferences. Most power conferences have one top 5 team and then two or three top 15ish teams.

Why would you want one of those top 15ish teams to suffer an extra loss? Let Ohio State run Northwestern in the B1G title game and then Penn State can back there way in.

How many times is a P5 champion going to finish outside the top 6 highest ranked conference champions? It’s far more likely you lose an at-large team matching up the two top teams.

Does the American not already just pick its top two teams? They don’t play a full round robin.

Yes. They dropped divisions when UConn left.
