I want to buy a good video camera, mostly for sporting events as I have one entering high school who plays sports heavily. (School will let me set it up on football press box and in basketball stands, so I will be recording from some mid range distances).
I’m going into this cold (haven’t even Googled the topic yet) and I was thinking maybe in the $1000 a $1500 range. Is that doable or is it laughable?

Start with Sony or Panasonic and you won’t be disappointed. Then shop your budget and a bit beyond. Read some reviews and then try to get some hands-on feel for it. Buy once cry once usually works.
Back in 2003 I bought an $800 Sony mini-digital-tape cam to bring with me on a trip back to Vietnam. A great purchase and my daughter still uses it today.
But now they have 4K cams in your price range.
