The problem is that you don’t know how they’ll hit until they actually face college pitchers who can consistently locate offspeed. If you have a good defensive catcher who is a plus-plus hitter he won’t make it to college.

Most catchers that play college ball are either a liability at the plate or in the field especially as a freshman/sophomore. A high school catcher that is really good at one and competent at the other usually gets drafted and goes pro.
