but as far as their relationship with God and faith is concerned, I can see some real damage that can occur from it, if not long term, then certainly in the immediate future. That is where the damage really occurs IMO, giving young people a very false perception and understanding of the relationship between themselves and God.
That's possibly a fair argument, but raising your children in a church where some egotistical jackass has control of your kids in a private environment for long stretches at a time is ripe for abuse. And it also calls into question the judgment of the overall church leadership.
But I'm not a big fan of youth groups and youth activities and "making a man out of them" doctrines anyway. I'm very leery of who I let teach my kids and I'm not paying for a church camp that touts mockery and humiliation and physical exertion of kids as the road to true discipleship. That's not in my Bible.

The issue with many non denominational churches like this- is they are owned by one family- the pastor's family, So the pastor, his kids etc are the church leadership.
They normally do not have a written membership list that a denominational church would have . The church in effect belongs only to the family legally. thus they make all the decisions.
Rule number one when joining a new church- See how membership works, who the pastors, elders, church leaders are and then ask about church governance. Even the catholic church can answer these questions-
