After Britain ceded control of the lands it claimed from the Ottoman Empire after WWI, the West no longer had hegemony over the Middle East, which is one of the most geopolitically important locations on the planet due to petroleum and the Suez Canal, but is also one of the most geopolitically unstable areas on the planet due to ancient racial and ethnic divisions.

After WWII, there was a refugee crisis across Europe as the Jews that fled German persecution ended up in countries that either didn't have the resources to assimilate them or didn't want them there. What better way to re-establish Western influence in the Middle East than to create a country with port access to both the Atlantic Ocean via the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean via the Red Sea and then fill that country with Jewish settlers who largely have a favorable view of the Western powers that fought the Germans?

And that's why Western powers love Israel. The United States had a far more tepid reaction (in general) to immigrating Jews after WWI, so a large number of them came here after WWI and all through WWII and the years immediately after. Many of those people settled in the NYC/NJ area simply because they got off the boat there and quit traveling. After all, they'd been through decades of war on the European mainland, walked across much of it, rode on trains (some way less lethal than others), crammed into ships, and then spent weeks on the ocean. If they did travel after arrival, they tended to migrate to the other great cities of the Upper Eastern Seaboard and Chicago. So, we have a large Jewish population compared to much of the other Western powers. That population also tends to cluster in our largest and most important cities, so they have a political voice. Hence, due to our demographics and distance from both Israel and Europe, we tend to be able to fill the role of the cheerleaders for Israel. Though Israel largely can handle its own defense at this point, our ability to project force through our aircraft carriers also allows us to tell the rest of the Middle East to frick around and find out when it comes to REALLY threatening the existence of Israel and, by extension, Western influence in the region. Meanwhile the rest of the Western powers in Europe can take a less forward approach to Israel to avoid angering their own populations while still diplomatically supporting Israel to help keep a hold on and enjoy the benefits of Western influence in the region.

I have other reasons to support Israel, though.
