The federal government does not know if you are married or divorced. Through sovereign immunity and the supremacy clause.. it ultimately doesn’t care.
Try showing a divorce decree to the IRS when you owe joint taxes on a return. The local judge may say one person is responsible... but the IRS says you both are anyway.
So just file single. You lose the benefit... but you avoid the punishment of success.
