The entire encounter needs to be documented by a 3rd party (phone, dash cam, etc). There are entirely too many consensual interactions with police that aren't properly documented. Dont count on police to document the situation

The more I see these situations take place, the more I'm considering installing a dash cam in my car, my wife's car, and my kid's car. When the shite hits the fan, I don't trust anybody to not try to cover up their dirty mess when they frick up. I can tell you personally, that I won't do a damn thing that will get me shot by the police.
