Maybe I’m misremembering, but can you name anyone else that just left their team in the middle of a game? Told his coach if he didn’t pull him he’d intentionally get kicked out of the game? Quit and got dressed in the middle of practice?
Like I said, what he said to the camera about throwing away his talent was just lip service. Actions speak louder than words.
Eh. It’s not a black and white issue. This show clearly paints the lives of the players and coaches as a grey area. People are complicated. He can equally be the player on the court that acted out and also the scared kid behind the camera. The guy isn’t an actor or journalist. He has no way of guarding his words or been coached on how to do that. These kinds of shows cut through the bullshite. I can see where some of the coaches could do that. Buddy certainly did. But he’s a kid.
He did do some fricked up shite during games and practice but I think we miss the point of the show when we say things like “worst character in the history of the show”. Like the coach said, most of these guys only have a tiny window and most don’t have someone to push them through it, let alone give them a second chance. Most of them don’t know what to do with a second chance. Joe has baggage and mental issues. We’ve seen a story like his many a time but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t root for them or write them off. The point is even if the story is the same...he’s still a person.
It’s just an easy answer to say he’s a shithead and move on. That requires no thought, no empathy, which is what the show encourages. Put yourself in these kids shoes. It’s scary shite to live through what could be the last chance to get your life turned around.
