The frickin Marlins were trying to sign one of the biggest free agents of all time? I do not believe that
The Marlins actually spent money in the 2011-12 offseason. They were moving into their new park. They had new units and changed the name from Florida to Miami. They hired Ozzie Guillén as manager. They had a young core of Hanley Ramirez, Gioncarlo Stanton, Ricky Nolasco, and Aníbal Sanchez. They signed(and overpaid) for Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle while trading for Carlos Zambrano. They were a "sexy" offseason playoff pick, but It all went to crap early on, and they traded off Ramírez, Nolasco, and Sánchez before the end of the season, while trading Reyes(who had signed a 6 year 106 million dollar contract) and Buehrle(4 year 58 million) to Toronto in the offseason. Guillén was fired, and the rebuild was on. So, yes they did show interest in signing Pujols in 2012.
Yeah, I remember being more surprised by the Marlins not signing Pujols than I was by the Cardinals not resigning him.
They were serious contenders for a while, or at least in the early going for all the reasons you mention.
