Players have nothing to gain by staying in college other than maturing. Anything basketball related can be taught and worked on at a much higher level in the league or G league. It's just not even comparable.
I'm sure you're not saying players don't improve on the court year to year in college. I'm stuck on Tim Duncan right now or I'd give some examples.
Growing up some before being surrounded by guys who are older than you, have their own influences and habits---good or bad---and being expected to produce whether in practice or games is only a good idea.
Some guys can handle it. Most are not ready for what they face whether they reach expected levels of production or not.
