Risk vs. reward.
What are the chances you'll need it and be able to get to it, vs. the chance one of your boys go looking, find it, and start playing.
Sounds like your boys are knowledgeable enough, and may not have that curiosity if they are allowed to use them responsibly outside the house. I know when I was that age, I wasn't gun adept, and would have gone playing.
I struggle with the same scenario. I don't have kids, but my nieces and nephews are over often enough and I ask them to stay out of our bedroom without an adult being in there due to guns being in a couple of strategic areas.
