Actually this is kind of an interesting situation. Most American restaurants have reusable silverware. If you go to a nice place, they usually have a good knife for a steak, soup spoon, etc., so you are getting good utensils to use.
Most Japanese places Just give you the wooden, throwaway ones. I can see people wanting to use a better quality reusable set they can bring.
Would people bring their own utensils to American restaurants if they have you plastic utensils?

I actually use the cheapy ones like at the grocery store sushi counter way better than the nice ones. I am almost as good on them as I am with regular utensils, but I'm not as good with the nicer/longer disposable ones they use in seated places.
I imagine I'd be bad with the nice reusable ones due to their weight.
