While I don’t think this is necessarily a form of virtue signaling, it does appear to have become the “it” thing to do. So it’s either pandering to someone, or it is being used to show some form of “monkey-see, monkey-do” legitimacy.
I also agree that it is wholly unnecessary and is just for show (CC worked just fine for many many years).
