I am looking for a bit of advice. I recently switched my registration and license over to Louisiana and I am now looking for car/renter's insurance here in BR. I'm already aware of the fact that insurance here is among the highest anywhere, but I was wondering if anybody knew where I could get the best possible price with the coverage still being decent. I called a few places and they were in the $100/month range for liability coverage

Pertinent info: I'm 26, unmarried, never had an accident or ticket, a graduate student, and I drive a car that's over 10 years old.

thanks in advance

25/50/25 should be the lowest for your limits...I would receommend 50/100/50....what type of vehicle?

97 Chevy Lumina...only has 60K miles on it though. I've had it forever and it's in perfect shape.

Once again, such an intelligent response.
Do us ALL a favor and go somewhere else.

Why would you suggest 25/50/25 when you have no idea of what he is tying to protect?
What if he has $1,000,000 in cash he needs to protect? Would 25/50/25 be enough? NO
What if he doesn't NEED that much coverage?
He would be overpaying premium.

I would suggest getting the correct coverages to properly insure him...not just throw out a # with no info. Who's the jerk now?

10/20/0 is not enough...regardless of the fricking vehicle....medical costs and auto prices are rising and 10/20 doesn't cover shite.

If you are trying to protect a $1,000,000 you would need an umbrella policy.

Put that in your fricking pipe and smoke it.

Why the bitterness?
You dont just pick a # out of the air when figuring this out, would you agree or no?

the original point of the question was if there is a company or broker that might be more affordable, not so much what my limits should be. I went with my old company b/c they rewarded the no points/no accidents combo and I was hoping to find something similar here

sorry if I didn't make that clear

More affordable?
Shopping around is the only way to know for sure...
Progressive and Geico, low rates INITIALLY, then raise rates every time you renew..that's just the way they operate.
State Farm, higher rates but great discounts with a renter's policy or life policy attached to your auto. And traditionally, premier claims and customer service.(Check JD Power ratings)
Farm Bureau, Farmers, All State...not real sure.

Rates are determined by a ton of factors. People don't seem to realize that agents can't legally give discounts...the # that pops out of their computer is the rate, thats it.

I just switched completely from State Farm (with them forever) to Shelter.

I had three cars on State Farm and my house on Shelter.

I put all three cars on Shelter with the house, raised my coverages to 100/300/100 and am saving $1000 annually.

Shelter apparently uses a formula that includes your credit rating and that was part of the reason my price drop was steep.

There are only 2 companies that DO NOT use credit ratings for insurance. Safe Auto and one other. Way to go Shelter.

Don't be surprised if they jack up your HO premium next year as SafeCo is doing to people.
