They view conservatives as unintelligent, uncaring, and archaic through the stereotypes of the various media that they consume and thus try to take the opposite positions as much as possible.

For many that are born or live in the south, they wish to appear different, counter-cultural in their local community as their defining characteristic. They feel like it makes them seem enlightened and thus better than their "redneck" neighbors. That's essentially most of the leftist posters on this messageboard.
