But when O’Brien was fired apparently he was assured he would have input but he wasn’t even told they hired a GM he found on Twitter. Pretty disrespectful to not even call the most important player by far and say hey we’re going with Nick Caserio as GM at least.
I wanna address this specific point before I address the trade hypothetical. Yes, McNair screwed up by promising to give Watson input on hires. But Watson and his agent have met McNair and know how squirrelly he is—that “press conference/announcement” the other day was cringe—and were pretty naive if they thought he (or even the best owner in the NFL) was going to let a 25-year-old, 4th-year QB have significant input into the hiring of the 2 most important non-player positions of a $3 billion franchise.
I like Watson a lot, and he must be pretty intelligent to have graduated from Clemson in 3 years and picked up a complicated NFL offense almost immediately. But he hasn’t been around long enough in life in general and the NFL specifically for his opinion to hold much weight regarding such hires. Hell, anybody besides BOB would probably seem like a genius in comparison.
He just hasn’t been in the league long enough to have even been around all the different coaches and GMs in the league to give an informed opinion. And McNair is hiring to build a winner and increase the value of his franchise, while Watson would likely—and understandably—be drawn to a more offensive-minded coach that would be able to showcase his talents. And isn’t he on vacation? How’s he supposed to give an informed opinion unless he was actually present for the interviews or at least available to go out to dinner with the potential candidates?
Again, McNair screwed up by promising it and not at least giving Watson a courtesy conversation before hiring. But Watson and his representation were pretty naive if they thought he was gonna get significant input. As big as the NFL contracts have gotten for QBs, they still don’t have that kind of Lebron juice. Didn’t Aaron Rodgers pretty much hate their latest HC hire at first? Or at least the fact he had no say whatsoever? Wasn’t too pleased they drafted his potential replacement in the 1st round this year either. And he’s certainly earned that much more than Watson at their respective career stages.
Another thing to consider—and it may be that Bieniemy just wanted nothing to do with interviewing for that job—is that BOB fricked them so bad that even with Watson, that’s just not a desirable gig right now. Especially if McNair sucks.

On Bienemy The last sentence is plausible but we’ll see if he gets a HC job where he goes and if he’s holding out for a certain job not wanting to work for certain owners in the current climate I’d think he want to let that be known even if it’s behind the scenes.
As far as the Texans, yes OBrien made some awful trades and it definitely puts them in a bad spot but (and I know people hate woulda couldas :lol;) but they could have easily won 7-8 games this year with minor tweaks but that aside a competent GM and good coach could have them around 8 wins next year and a chance to be back in contention with Watson.

I agree you shouldn’t let a player make the hire but if you told him you value his input then a courtesy call to let him know who you hired is a bare minimum. Blow smoke up is arse and tell him you liked his suggestions but decided to go another direction but to not call at least is total incompetence
