Also, while the Kreese backstory was really well done, I’m not sure it’s really relevant to this story. Kreese is who he is. He’s done evolving, and it doesn’t really matter why he is the way he is like it does for Johnny because there is still hope for Johnny. It’s his story. Kreese is almost more worthy of a spin-off rather than something that needed to be squeezed in here. It just seemed like a lot of time taken away from the main story.
This is why it's relevant

Enter Terry Silver
Setting it up for Season 4

Well yeah I know that’s the reason they did it but I’m just saying it wasn’t necessary. We already know Kreese saved Silver’s life in the war.
But that still doesn’t make all those details relevant to the Daniel/Johnny story.
We don’t need 30 minutes in a five hour season dedicated to a war story from 50 years ago that doesn’t offer anything new to the two main characters.
Again, the scenes were well done but it really was just filler when it comes to what is happening now. Trying to make Kreese and Silver more sympathetic doesn’t change what maniacs they are today or how they are impacting the lives of the students. That’s a story for a different show imo.
We didn’t need more than a few quick flashbacks to show what we needed to see, like they do with every other callback.
The opening flashback of new material showing why Kreese joined the military was great, and maybe the very end showing how he saved the unit and his shithead commander (we get it no bad students only bad teachers) would have been fine. But really it ended up being like a full episode worth of Anthony Michael Hall and their mission and unit and capture and escape, etc etc.
I just don’t think it added much to what we’re watching play out today, even though the scenes were well done. Just felt like a story for a different series imo.
