Brad Johnson on 'arm strength'... "Arm strength is the most overrated part of football"

quote:

Brad Johnson, a ninth-round pick in 1992, led the Bucs to their first championship last January. He's considered a touch passer, and his counterpart in Super Bowl XXXVII, the Raiders' Rich Gannon, also relies more on guile than
a strong arm. There have been questions about Pennington's arm strength, although his brilliance at running the West Coast offense got the Jets to theplayoffs last season.

"Arm strength is the most overrated part of football," Johnson said. "The most important thing about a quarterback is knowing the system, understanding where everyone is, quickness with your feet, accuracy, and throwing a ball that's catchable. It's not throwing a ball real hard. Very rarely do you see a ball thrown over 40 yards."

Johnson also said the pass usually considered the best barometer of arm strength isn't used much. It's called the "deep out," where a receiver lines up wide, runs 15 to 20 yards upfield and cuts toward the sideline. Scouts place
such emphasis on the throw because NFL defensive backs are so much quicker than college players in breaking on the ball, creating a higher risk of interception.

"In this league, you can't name one team that throws 10 'outs' the whole year," Johnson said.
