I have some friends that do this and love it. The issue is costs, and maintaining a 4x4 vehicle just gets expensive as all hell, especially if you cannot act as your own mechanic.
I want to do a trip and have a Jeep, but right now it's such a pain in the arse to find groups willing to help a newbie learn to off road.
