I've been a fan since 1977, and we haven't had a bowl ban since then. We were on some sort of minor football probation in the early 1980s-most likely docked a few scholarships.
Basketball on the other hand, was DECIMATED in the late 1990s. Major scholarship losses over multiple years, and a postseason ban. A few years later it was reduced significantly on appeal, and a few years after that Lester Earl signed a sworn affidavit that he lied about LSU under intense pressure from the NCAA. Earl was told he had to provide dirt on LSU in order to be able to transfer to Kansas and play for that saint Roy Williams.
Johnny Jones was balls deep in these violations, and I'm sure Dale was aware of what was happening.
Big time college sports is rife with illegal inducements to players and family. That's what makes the pay these poor player arguments ridiculous. Trust me, the guys that produce revenue for the schools are paid HANDSOMELY under the table. The NCAA seems to pick and choose who to hammer and who to let slide. The best way to handle them is to stand up and fight them (see UNC).
