COVID is still going through a surge.
Masks don't work against aerosolized virus particles that hang in the air. Aerosolized particles are orders of magnitude smaller than the fibers on your cloth masks, not even counting the gaps where the mask doesn't fit the contours of your face. Its like throwing a grain of sand at a chain link fence and expecting the fence to stop it.
ETA: Droplets fall to the ground within seconds. Unless you are within 3' of someone coughing, droplets aren't much of a concern.
