I hated them until I was 40, and then I started making them proper at home. My recipe above is my recommendation, although purists say it's either olive or lemon peel, not both. I like both, as the drink slowly gets saltier as you finish. The lemon peel nicely offsets the heavy booze.

Orange bitters are NOT negotiable. They are essential and make the drink.

Now, every other cocktail seems like a poor substitute.

The cocktail club I belong in has a saying, “It’s your cocktail”. You make a cocktail to your liking as long as you have the basic ingredients to call it a cocktail.
