That was my first thought, as well - that Palpatine spared Grogu from Order 66.

If Favreau actually intends to lead the Mandalorian into the sequels, then Palpatine’s “insurance policy” of always having his next apprentice picked out / a bunch of force sensitive Snoke clones at the ready (such a ridiculous thing to even type) it could explain Grogu’s original purpose.

Of course, I am not hoping they actually go this direction, but there is cover in case they do.

I’m also a sucker for references to the prequels/pre-Empire era. I love that they’ve mentioned Coruscant in a few episodes, used the same actor for Jango and Boba, and my favorite part of Rogue One was Bail Organa being present. If this series could eventually lead to a force ghost appearance by Hayden Christensen, I think that would be awesome!
