From what I understand next week is a clip/retrospective/documentary episode and then the finale.
So I guess if everything plot-wise wrapped up, it's a farewell to show what happens after the season plot ended and bring final closure.
It is sad; I've fallen off watching every week but I distinctly remember watching when it first aired all those years ago (September 13, 2005).

I'm eager to see how much closure the 2 main characters get. I've listened to both actors in interviews say they'd be open doing a shortened season on a streaming platform. And with the show's creator now over at Amazon with his newest series "the boys", I wouldn't doubt we see it get a short run on Amazon Prime in the future.
