Remember this infamous speech from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty?

This game came out in 2001 and took place in a fictional 2009.

There's been a lot of videos about that conversation. It really does line up very well with what's happened with social media. Facebook, Twitter, etc.

It nailed the idea that humanity would be drowning in a sea of trivial and biased information. The best quotes

quote:

But in the current, digitized world, trivial information is accumulating every second, preserved in all its triteness. Never fading, always accessible.

quote:

The digital society furthers human flaws and selectively rewards development of convenient half-truths.

quote:

The untested truths spun by different interests continue to churn and accumulate in the sandbox of political correctness and value systems. Everyone withdraws into their own small gated community, afraid of a larger forum. They stay inside their little ponds, leaking whatever "truth" suits them into the growing cesspool of society at large. The different cardinal truths neither clash nor mesh. No one is invalidated, but nobody is right.

If you read it without knowing where it was from, you'd swear it was a a modern take down of Twitter and Facebook etc, but as you pointed out, this was written in 2001.

Nobody on the political board gave a shite about it so you had to bring it over here.

The first draft was written in 1999. It was originally supposed to be released in October 2001, but when September 11th happened, they had to scramble to remove a scene in which Arsenal Gear tore through downtown Manhattan, destroying both the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center before stopping on top of Federal Hall (where the battle with Solidus takes place) and was delayed until late-November 2001 as a result.

It's brilliant because, by taking Snake out of the picture early, Raiden/Jack represents you, the player.

We may see Guns of the Patriots (War Economy, everyone ID tagged by nanomachines) take place over the next 5 years.

Sadly, the actual news media figured out they had to compete with the instant, headline grabbing social media.

Now they edit and tailor headlines until it gets the appropriate amount of attention, and everything is "Breaking News."

I don't believe I've ever played a Metal Gear Solid game. My PS3 came with Metal Gear Solid 3, and I never played it.

There was always a central one word theme to the main games in the series.

Metal Gear Solid 1 was "gene"
Metal Gear Solid 2 was "meme"
Metal Gear Solid 3 was "scene"
Metal Gear Solid 4 was "sense"
Metal Gear Solid 5 was "race/revenge"
