Good Drill for Squaring Face Correctly?

So recently got a lesson, instructor had me nuetralize my grip and open my hands more on the back swing so end of the club is pointing right at the target at the top. I guess I was keeping it closed all the way back and losing a lot of ability to work the ball and getting some hook action at times.
Now I'm having trouble with either leaving the club too open and pushing it right or over closing the face and pulling it left. Really struggling to get things right at the target.
This is really only happening on my Irons and Wedges. Driver is in 100x better shape after the lesson and just feels more natural.
Any drills or suggestions on this one? I don't think it's my hips as like I said, only really happening on wedges and irons.

I would question any teacher having you manipulate the club face in the downswing to square it up. I would always prefer a flat left wrist at the top (square or even a little closed) you should be working the ball with the face at setup and your body lines. What he is teaching is very old school and hard to repeat. You won't hook it if you turn out of the way, watch DJ and Koepka.

Biggest thing I get taught for club face is trying to bow that left wrist at the top of the back swing (right handed). Usually if I try to bow it, I almost get to flat but still a little cupped. Really reduces the need to manipulate the face on the dwon swing and just move through the ball.

And no drills other than working on changing where my face is pointing in the back swing and at the top of the back swing. Along with towel drill for club part.
I’ve obviously gotta go back and pay him more money I expect.

Yea, I'm in a really weird state right now. Early in the summer, I was legit flirting with breaking 80. 85-90 was a bad round and was pretty regularly shooting low 80s.
Then my driver went to absolute shite where I lost all distance hitting the heel every time.
Went and got the lesson and he completely re worked my takeaway and grip. It's been kind of a long road getting back below 90, shooting mid 90s pretty consistently. All which are attributed to shitty shots off the tee and bad iron shots on par 3s. Never had a problem with par 3s until this change.
Driver is back but irons are nowhere near where they were with my old takeaway. Kind of thinking the driver was just me standing too close and swinging outside in too much, both were an easy fix.
I think I'll go back for one more after more practice but yea, like you, a little concerning initially.
I'm in my head pretty bad on anything besides chipping and putting.

Sounds like you are where I was about a year ago.
My advice is when you are playing just swing don’t think. You’ve taken enough lessons and hit enough balls now to have muscle memory. I was so worried about my take away, attack angle, etc.... finally something clicked and I actually started telling myself “just be an athlete” (corny I know). But now i just make sure I am set up correctly pre shot and let it rip. It’s not perfect but I’m now consistently in the low 80’s and breaking 80 every 3-4 rounds

Maybe get an impact bag...
One drill that helped me was a cardboard box 2x2ft placed 1 ft in front of your clubface on the target line.
When you swing you have to punch a hole in the box with the toe of the club. This makes you close the clubface down.

Jeez I'm no pro but trying to manipulate the clubhead through the impact zone
A. is impossible to attempt
B. attempting this is going to screw up your swing
The impact zone lasts like 0.005 seconds... there is literally nothing your body can sense, then enact physically in this time instance
The clubhead squares through impact naturally based on setup, takeaway, and transition. This is what dictates how the clubhead matches up.
The clubhead RELEASES through impact... it isn't MANIPULATED through impact
All your power releases
Imagine drawing a line on a tree you're chopping down. You want the axe blade to line up right on that line you drew... are you going to swing the axe back, swing it, and then right before it hits the tree think about lining it up correctly?
No... you set up... swing back and keep your eye on the tree and just naturally swing at it and how the axe has loaded in the swing back will guide it to where it is. Same thing.

The ax analogy doesnt really apply
Take the club half way back to the toe up position then swing the club thru slowly to toe up on the follow thru
The club rotates thru the impact zone.
