His plan was very well thought out and he was hands down the best candidate this year. What is going to happen is a lot of people are going to fight tooth and nail against change, and then we will get some terrible formation of UBI, potentially not Universal, not funded in a way where it benefits the largest number of people, etc.

Any society that just gives people money to exist and expects nothing else is doomed to have issues.

Lack of employment fuels crime rates.

That is why it should not be at a level which gives people the ability to live a decent life and not work. Also, it should be crafted in a manner which will increase job opportunities.

That is a Forbes articled which discusses the likely impact on employment.

quote:

“It is reasonable to expect an unconditional cash transfer, such as a universal income, to decrease employment,” the authors say. “A key concern with a universal basic income is that it could discourage people from working, but our research shows that the possible reductions in employment seem to be offset by increases in spending that in turn increase the demand for more workers.”

The researchers found that the unconditional payments to residents had no real impact upon full-time employment levels (whether positive or negative), although they did find that part-time work increased by about 17%.

Certainly more research should be done and we have limited data to draw conclusions from at best. But just offhandedly discarding an idea because of a base level assumption is foolish.

Also - and again this needs to be universal as in everybody gets it, but the benefit to those people who would receive such a benefit, continue to work and use it to improve their lives would vastly outweigh those who would receive it, decide to not work for selfish reasons (there are good reasons someone could choose to not work fwiw, get more education, raising children, etc.).
