how would that be a fumble and not an illegal forward pass?

I think an illegal forward pass is basically a fumble, as long as it’s recovered by the opposing team... I’m saying this based on years of simply watching football and with no clue of the actual rule

Interesting question.

In my head, it's like this:

A RB or KR that tries to lateral it forward it would be an illegal forward pass but still be a live ball and a fumble if the other team recovers it.

A QB overhand throws it downfield when past the line of scrimmage, then it would be an illegal forward pass but a dead ball if not caught in the air.
