Man one of the best guns for that age in my opinion is a .223 single shot / break over. Good caliber but also very safe and excellent for learning gun safety in the field

I got a Remington 700 chambered in .25-06 and my 12 year old daughter shot a doe with it last year. It’s a good round for a youngen.
