I heard someone saying that one of the biggest weaknesses for LSU this year will be the linebackers. If that is so, it will hurt our coverage and definitely our run defense. Anyone have info on this unit?

They'l be fine, especially with how good our DL will be.

Riley is big and mean... another Beckwith. KS could be good, but I don't know about him. We will be fine, trust me.

LB is not a "talent" problem as much as it is a "depth" problem.

I think with 2 new starters it's more of a question mark than a weakness at this point.

I am famously more pessimistic about LSU's LBs over the last few years than almost all other posters here. Is it wrong for me to get my hopes up about this new Baker kid?

If joking.

If serious.

Linebacker isn't a problem, it's just lack of experience. Beckwith is a stud and be a big time leader. Riley has limited expereince but will be fine. Foyle, Clemmons, Sheppard, Cutrera, Kellen Theriot, Prater and Ryan Baker will fill in where needed and provide depth and talent.

Besides, the best friend a LB has is the D-Linemen and we have studs in front of them stacked two deep.
They'll be fine.

I think 2 new starters = weakness until proven otherwise in my book. Same with QB. And no depth could be a big issue with how physical SEC play is. Guess we will just have to just wait and see.

That's a myth. The scheme fricked him. I remember him basically shutting down Bama's offense when he was put in the game in '06.

I agree. Danny McCray is a good football player.

With the proliferation of the spread and/or 3 WR base offenses, we are in nickel approximately 40% of the time. So that means we are playing a third corner or safety in lieu of that third LB 40% of the time.

We are developing some depth at LB, but none of it is proven, save Cutrera at Mike. If the presumptive starters are Riley at Sam, Beckwith at Mike and Sheppard at Will, then, outside of Cutrera, the remainder of the LB corps have zero snaps, at LB, in SEC or post-season play. I believe that Foyil (transfer) has played some special teams, and he played for Tulane as a true freshman, but is currently fighting the injury bug.

Bottom line is that we always seem to find/develop enough LBs to get the job done, but since Faulk/James, we've not had a dominant, intimidating LB corps.

I guess you consider every team in college football weak then because people graduate every damn year. Did you consider us weak at QB, WR and Safety last year?

i can agree with that...it always look like he was lost or the scheme just left him hanging where he had to chase down WRs.

Based on what I'm piecing together (And someone please correct me if any is wrong) here's what I'm seeing.

Darry Beckwith will start at middle linebacker. The rest are still up in the air due to Perry Riley missing spring after an injury and Sharmoni Clemens missing the second half as a result of a suspension for an off-the-field situation. Look for Kelvin Sheppard at the outside linbacker position and Jacob Cutrera behind Beckwith on the depth chart with freshman Keleen Theriot as the big surprise at the weak-side position.

In the secondary losing Chevis Jackson and Jonathon Zenon at the cornerback position and will leave LSU with little experience at that position. Right now Chris Hawkins has looked pretty solid at one corner but the other side is wide open with Patrick Peterson (Johnson) making a push for it. Johnson is said to be proving every bit as good as advertised and could very possibly be the starter.

I said until proven so yes, before you know about how they will do I might consider that a weakness until proven otherwise on the field.

QB looms as our biggest limiting factor "considering the importance of the position", lack of experience, and no depth.

CB looms as our biggest weakness on defense due to lack of starting experience on the corners.

LB is a spot of vulnarbility due to lack of starting experience on the outside and lack of depth.

Penalties could raise its ugly head again and bite us big-time.
