It really is dementia! My Mother did this the last few months of her life. Everything 60 years ago was so clear!!

Memory loss in dementia does move backwards, with them forgetting the more recent things first.

Unfortunately, my mother does the same thing after her stroke... she tells the same stories of her childhood over and over in the same sitting...
