Literally no one on the show is supposed to be white lol. They are all based on Asian descent.
Yep. Unless I missed something in the three times I've watched the entire series. Even the Inuits, though we have a healthy population of them in Alaska and parts of Canada, are basically as Asian as you can get.
Claiming ATLA would be "woke" if they cast Asian actors for a live action show would be like claiming Anne of Green Gables is "woke" for casting white people.
I am sorry to hear the creative minds behind the cartoon won't be working on the show. I have real doubts about someone else pulling this off and not having it be a complete disaster.

It honestly wouldn’t shock me if 1 of 2 or both of these happened:
1) In order to promote diversity, they need black people (and maybe even white people) on the cast, which Mike and Bryan would rightfully refuse given the series was largely based on the Second Sino-Japanese War.
2) Netflix wanted this to be the next Game of Thrones/Star Wars and didn’t want to piss off the Chinese government, so they wanted to force them to change key parts of the Earth Kingdom (where half the villains are from) to make them default good guy country. If this is the case, I hope Mike and Bryan took a massive shite on the Netflix executives desks on the way out. A significant portion of that show was implicitly defending the Chinese people while saying their government was morally equivalent to the genocidal imperialism of the Japanese and Nazis. They would rightfully leave the negotiations in outrage if the Netflix executives were remotely concerned with the opinions of the CCP.
