I remember one year when Nicklaus removed every other tine on the trap rakes, and then raked the traps perpendicular to the green to make the traps true “hazards”. The players bitched so much, he didn’t do it again.

This is true, the tour players will take a green side bunker shot all day at most places with thick fluffy sand over being in thicker grass.
