If you watch The Last Dance about how absolutely obsessed Jordan was with working hard and getting better, or hear stories of Kobe Bryant and his approach to working on his game...the list goes on forever.

Every one of those players has a work ethic beyond a normal athlete. J.Russell didn’t have the work ethic. Great talent got him a massive amount of money, maybe more than a lot of professional players would make in their entire careers. But he was a flop because he didn’t want to work hard.

I worked out with a guy who played with him at Williamson HS in Mobile. He said Russell hated getting hit and that Russell was always a little soft and shy if you got some licks on him. Some guys just don’t have the physicality or the drive to dominate.

You’re right about the work habits. I remember reading a story that Russell was dating Fats Dominos niece when Katrina hit. Fats moved in with Russell and his GF after Katrina and Russell said he learned a lot about dedication to your kraft and the detail it takes to be great from Fats. You saw the results in 06 as it was by far his best season college or pro. No other season in his entire career resembled the 06 season and I’m sure no other off season resemble his prep work for that year either.
