My buddies who also hunt in Ray-vegas planted round up ready seeds and their crop looks pretty good as well. Is that the same as this? They said they spent more than they have in the past.

No, there is no Roundup Ready sunflower variety. They are either conventional or have Clearfield technology.

We’ve been paying about $175/bag for some Clearfield sunflowers from Mycogen, but Mycogen is now defunct so I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet for next year. I don’t even know what non Clearfields cost.

While Clearfield does give you a couple of options “over the top,” it’s still no picnic if you don’t get a pre emerge herbicide out behind the planter. Those over the top options aren’t worth a shite on any weed over 3 or 4 inches, but if you have a pre emerge out, and then get some Select, Beyond, and Zidua out within a month after the sunflowers emerge, you can maintain a really nice, clean sunflower field... But you’re talking about probably $75/acre in seed and herbicide at this point.

That’s what I have not been able to understand about Clearfield varieties. It’s all my farmer buddies plant but at $200/bag and still having to spray pre-emerge like I do and then Select over the top if it gets grassy it doesn’t make sense for me. But if I had a charge account at Helena or whenever I’d plant the good ones too
