There is no way to be ready for it. There is not a single network on this planet that can not be breached with enough resources and effort.
There's a common phrase in the cybersecurity world....the defender has to be right 100% of the time. The attacker just has to be right once.
Opening our voting system to the internet would create utter chaos, period.
