It gives them more power, more control of citizens and makes citizens more reliant on government for an income. Once people become reliant on government, they'll vote for that party as long as they continue to promise them "free money", because no one will want to work if they get paid to sit on their butts.
Also, every single death from a state that's open will be used by the dems to say "told ya so" and that the person put money above lives.
