Couer d'Alene, ID
Asheville, NC
Wenatchee, WA
Billings, MT
McCall, ID (can get touristy)
Carlsbad, CA (it is in the San Diego MSA though)
Wayzata or Excelsior, MN (winter though...)
Santa Fe, NM
were all areas that I thought could be family friendly with stuff to do.
