I know most of you are strong advocates for being fit, so here's a head scratcher for y'all.

Went by Edwin Watts to test out some Srixon 500 irons. Found 2 sets of 585s. One had reg modus and the other had a kbs 120 tour, and I found another set with modus stiff. All three of these carried within 3 yards of each other. Had good numbers with each. Then I tried some Ping i500 with Recoil F3 shafts and was right there with the others. Lastly, finished off with some S300's in an older set of Srixons and bam... right there with the rest of the pack.

Are we over thinking the iron fitting approach? (personally think drivers are much more important to get fit)

Well, carry distance is only 1 number. It’s damn near the least significant especially on a juiced EW monitor.
Spin, launch angle, ball speed are just as important if not more. Ask to borrow a 7i and hit it on the range.

You can't overthink fitting for any club, even putters. For instance, if the lie angle on your irons is 2 degrees upright you'll be hitting wedges and 9 irons in the left bunker with good swings. Also, you can get lofts customized for your optimum trajectory. And then there's shaft flex and material, which greatly influences trajectory and distance.

Bottom line: never invest in irons without a complete fitting.

Interested. You still got my email from that Ping Vault putter that was the wrong color for you?

It is very important to get fitted for irons. It is important to have each individual iron fitted for proper lie at impact, centerness of impact, length, lofts of each iron on how far you hit, shaft flex and grip size. If you are searching for more distance you can only get it increasing your clubhead speed with the shaft, centerness of impact, loft of the club and length of the club. It sounds like you are pretty standard with your needs, so it will be easy for a PGA golf professional to fit you, then just get the irons that look best to you. mtb
