Trying to purchase a 40. Got a few Tohatsu outboard questions.
Who was your contact for purchase?
Where is the trim located?
Any regrets with purchase?

What you got, bud?
ETA: I bought mine from Kyle at Lake Area Marine.
Trim is located on the tiller handle and on the side of the motor just below the cowling.
Zero regrets so far. I love it.
Currently at about 8.5 hours. Will complete the 10 hour break in this weekend.

They’re good motors. On the 40hp you can pull the restrictor plate on the intake for more azz.

The dealer I bought mine from did that without me even asking. And I can tell you, on a 1648, it has all the azz! haha
With just me, no gear, and only one battery and a full 6 gallon tank of gas, I hit 40mph. Loaded to the gills with two people, I've gotten it to 37ish. Cruising around 32 - 34mph at about 2/3ish throttle.
I did want more top speed over my 25hp, which I got, but my hole shot now is nice! That SOB hops up on plane with the quickness, which I needed because I fish in a lot of grass at times, and I need it to hop up quick to get outta that mess.

I have one now and have had two. They are very reliable. Yes pull the plate on the 40 helps. Also splurge on the 50hp cpu and change it for an extra boost of midrange.

I’ve heard some dealers are doing that. That’s awesome.

Thanks for the info. I will give them a call today and see what kind of price I get.
Is the forward/reverse on the tiller handle also or back near the cowling like Mercury?

Homey - got a quote on a 40 hp tiller from Lake area Marine today. Not so sure the price is good as yours was however I’m also interested in the ALWELD jon boat they carry. Did you look at these when you were there, are these good boats?

Ive looked into alwelds before. Built similar to my weld-craft in regards to thickness. I know many people with alwelds. Probably 10 in my neighborhood alone. 16ft or bigger will be .100 thick aluminum which is what i have.
If i had to guess, for the tohatsu, youre getting out the door with SS prop, gas tank, and fuel hose mounted for about 5800?

Asking $5900 for the Motor with everything you listed. $6000 for the 16/48 Alweld

TTL is a MFer bruh. That alone is about $600.
I called everywhere i knew of across the state except for Blacks in Lafayette. I dont care for them, personally. But closest to that will be jerrys marine in sulphur for a merc for about 5500 before TTL. And i doubt that includes the tank, hose, and SS prop.
Is the 5900 before TTL?

shite man, i dunno. Call around and compare prices. If you can get a better price somewhere else, do it. Mine was 2019 model, perhaps that's why.

Looking for some Tohatsu advice as well, at least until I can call a dealership next week.
Was going to buy a Suzuki 70 really soon, but started looking at the Tohatsus. Their 60hp is 239lbs. The Suzuki is 342lbs. But, the Tohatsu 75, 80, 90, and 100hp are all 359lbs. This really intrigues me... is it better to go with that super light 60, or could one get the 75hp Tohatsu, and easily get it upgraded in power since it's apparently using the same block across the upper horsepowers?

Hmm, thats a question i do not have the answer to. What i will say is that its been like what, a month or more with my new motor and i love it. Granted ive never had a motor with electric start and trim, but its quiet, light, and fast. So i definitely suggest Tohatsu for a small to medium outboard.

Thanks for chiming in, wasn't sure you'd see the thread bump. I see that Duvic's on the west bank is a dealer for both, so I'm going to call and pick their brains on it. My assumption is that the Tohatsu 75,80,90 and 100 must all use the same powerhead, due to the exact same weight specs. Just not sure if they'll tell me over the phone if I can get the 75 and (without voiding warranty) easily unrestrict it to gain those extra horses.
If that's the case, no sense in getting a 70 Suzuki if I can get a 75 Tohatsu in the same weight range, but crank out extra power for when my boat is under load during gator season. Of course, I have yet to compare pricing and warranty.
ETA: Going on an 18x54 homemade aluminum boat.

While out to buy a 50 hp tohatsu tiller, I see Tohatsu added the 60hp tiller to the short shaft lineup. Any prop recommendations? 1650 xpress jon

Talked to Tohatsu dealer. Tohatsu makes everything up to the 60hp. 60hp and up is made by Honda, and branded Tohatsu. 75, 80, 90, and 100hp are all the same engine, just programmed for different air/fuel ratios and such for the different hp ranges. Of course, voids warranty to change that programming.
