Given the likely mechanism of action of this, based on what I have seen so far I would not recommend using it as a prophylactic. I don't. But I would absolutely want to take it if I tested positive for Coronavirus and had a radiologically identifiable viral pneumonia.

I think anyone that had an ounce of commons sense and was taking care of patients infected with the Coronavirus would take it prophetically. If you have a pneumonia you have waited too freaking long.

No you haven't.

Hydroxychloroquine in general is used as an immune suppressant for Lupus patients. It makes you MORE likely to get certain kinds of infections. So there are good reasons why you don't want to be wandering around a hospital on it "just in case".

In the case of bilateral interstitial pneumonia caused by Coronavirus, it is this immune suppression (cytokines), along with the possibility that it inhibits coronavirus replication that prevents you from developing ARDS and dying.

While there is room to discuss exactly when hydroxychloroquine should be started in a COVID-19 positive patient, given what we know about the drug taking it for prophylaxsis does not sound like a good idea at all.
