Switch online family question

So we are a 2 switch family and I usually just play offline so my son and I can play the same digital game. However, I'm about to bite the bullet and get Animal Crossing. He wants us to be able to play together. Is this possible? Currently only my account has the online but if I buy the family online thing can we both be online on Animal Crossing without needing to buy a second game?

I think you can play locally on the same switch, each using a joycon, but I heard it's kind of clunky because you have to be on the same screen at the same time.
If you want to play on two different switches at the same time I think you'll need two copies. I can't answer about playing locally versus online.

I called Nintendo and per them I would need 2 copies of the game for us both to be online at the same time and play the same game.
