the right to an opinion

It’s a cultural precept. They’re not Virginians, so they don’t have standing to discuss our cultural affairs. It’s not their business.

Edit

I don’t know if this is Scotch-Irish influence, or Norman English influence. But there are strict limits to any one persons power over another in Virginia culture. Personal autonomy is huge. There are things I get to have an opinion on, and there are things that are just none of my business.

With the monuments, really the only people who would have standing are descendants of Confederate veterans. And that’s it.

In a sense, we all “own” them. And if we wanted to take them down. That would be one thing. But we generally don’t. That would be like toppling tombstones.

They live in Virginia. They pay Virginia state income tax. They pay property taxes. They pay state sales taxes.

But it’s none of their business. OK.
