The obvious answer is that you simply don't control if or how long that coach is going to be around.

It's like choosing a school based on your high school sweetheart. You only own half of that relationship. You can't make her love you and can't make her stay with you. It's foolish to make a decision based on things you can't control.

So, of course coaches make a difference. Of course they are important. But, anyone with half of a brain would know that a top coach at a middle tier school is a risk to leave.
