I have a theory that Dolly is a lesbian. She is married, but her husband refuses to go anywhere or do anything with her. The one person who is with her at every event, gathering, public appearance, etc. is her lifelong best friend who has always been a self-proclaimed tomboy.
Dolly comes from the era and business when being out would not fly, and she probably still feels it wouldn't fly today.

Allegedly, possibly, in my opinion, so on and so forth....
