I will bet you a lunch.

The usa has never stationed your relative in the Ukraine.

It was under the soviets from the 20s.

Currently we have a contingent training paratroopers there.

What story were you told?
What years?
Unit?

He never said his grandfather was definitely an American.

ETA: The back to America bit heavily implies it, though.

Operation Frantic was a series of seven shuttle bombing operations during World War II conducted by American aircraft based in Great Britain and southern Italy which then landed at three Soviet airfields in Ukraine. The operation ran between June and September, 1944.

I was just telling a condensed version, the woman was from ukraine. She was at wherever he was stationed in what I believe was the 1950s. The way I wrote it did make it sound like it was ukraine lol. He had mentioned to my dad that her goal was to move back to her home. She apparently had enough but continued to stay cause she enjoyed what they had going on.

He probably should have stayed with her somewhere tbh. May would have been happier than what he got.

This was all told to me over quite a few beers with my dad years back. Was the first I'd heard of it, I asked him if he remembered any real details, names or etc. Before my grandfather died ,he had mentioned names to my dad, but he had apparently forgotten them. Which is lame.
